Navigation
There are a lot of signs on the WHW which would allow you to walk without any map. We used West Highland Way guide by Charlie Loram and the West Highland Way map by Harvey Maps. We (==Ute) had a GPS, but we used it more for motivation than navigation and a compass which was used only once when we tried to figure out which of the mountains ahead is Ben Nevis.
People
We met a lot of nice people on the WHW. Among them were:
Dirk and Karsten from Germany, both walking the WHW alone, alas carrying a lot more than we did. I don’t want to imagine how much more they had to suffer…
- A funny pair from Leeds, we met in every pub on the way
. - Laure from Bordeaux, walking the WHW alone, too.
- a class of schoolkids from somewhere near Würzburg.
- a german guy working in the Rowardennan YH (thanks for giving us a room for four all for ourselves)
- the crazy runner we met somewhere near the Doune Boothy around 17:00 who told us his goal for the day was Tyndrum (25km away) who looked like he started in Milngavie the same day.
- Heather from the BnB
- The people working at the Glen Nevis YH, which were very helpfull.
Tips
Plan an additional day to go up Ben Lomond, compared to the rest of the trip, it’s really easy going and the view towards the southern end of Loch Lomond is great. Take the shorter but steeper trail up to the summit, the view is much better from there.
more to come later…

Welcome back. Sounds like quite a good experience although very wet. I am very curious about the photos you took and the stories about the scenery, the people and the pubs you’ll tell.
just added some stuff, more to come, as soon as I find the time. And I hope there are a few good pictures among the few hundred I took
