Furl vs. del.icio.us
by Frank Spychalski filed under Fun, articles

A few days ago I created accounts for del.icio.us and furl.net. Both are social bookmark manager with some cool features.

del.icio.us
look’n'feel
del.icio.us has the geeky strange colors whereas the furl pages have a nice but still simple layout. It’s no big drawback for del.icio.us but when I first hit the page I thought it was a hobby project of a colour-blind CS student…

Big bonus for both: there are no banners or other annoying ads or banners on both pages.

firefox integration
Furl comes with a furl firefox extension, which adds a furl button and an entry to the context menu. del.icio.us uses bookmarklets to add the same functionality. At first I thought this is a bonus for Furl. But at home (with the use of a bookmark synchronizer) del.icio.us was “already installed” whereas I had to download the Furl extension again.

privacy
Furl has private entries, in del.icio.us I found no way to mark something as private. Which means you can look at all the bookmarks from everybody.

speed
del.icio.us is way faster than furl.

user interface
It took me a few minutes to get used to del.*’s interface but now I love it - it’s simple and fast and makes it really easy to navigate your bookmarks just by clicking on links, no typing, no pulldown menus. The furl interface is ok but it’s like comparing the GMX mail interface to GMail, there’s nothing wrong with GMX, you can use it to write mail but GMail is still on a different level.

If you find this useful, you might like my other articles, too.

trial
Furl requires you to create an accout before you can do anything on their page. del.icio.us lets you browse the most active categories to get a feel for it.

Conclusion
I like del.icio.us better, because of the nifty interface. Some people may not like the missing privacy in del.icio.us, but to me it’s not a bug but a feature to be able to look what pages were put into a certain category by other people.

    Yet another social bookmark manager

I got a comment which invited me to have a look at igooi.com. I did. I created an account and played around for a few minutes. I think the service is ok, but I miss the reason why I should switch. More important, I won’t spend time to enter all my boo…

    my own del.icio.us clone

Last week after I wrote an answer to a comment about igooi I got the mad idea to write my own clone of del.icio.us. So far it’s going pretty good, considering I knew very little php and SQL when I started.

    Features implemented by now:

since other are doing it, I’ll pipe in too…

Try Spurl. It has many of the same features of Furl, plus it can hook into your del.icio.us account and post bookmarks there at the same time
