Two days I got my chumby. Chumby Industries tries really hard to keep foreigners from buying one of their nice toys: they only accept US credit cards and shipping only to a US address. But I’m lucky, one of my colleagues from Mountain View ordered one for me.
My experience so far was great.
Step one: configure WiFi
It detected my local network without a problem. I had to enter the password and was ready to go.
Step two: activate chumby
Create an account at chumby.com and click on “activate chumby”. It shows a 4×4 matrix of dots you have to copy to your chumby to connect you account with your device. This is a nice idea. It’s very simple, easy to use but effective. And surprisingly that’s it.
Step three: add widgets
Just one click. Sometimes the widgets need a some configuration but everything is explained right there.
Minor annoyances
- only two brightness settings: high & low
- you have to press pretty hard on the touchscreen
Plans:
Find a German power supply (should be easy) and start coding a widget
You have any idea how hard it is to export anything from the US? It’s madness.
I don’t know how hard it is but I can imagine. I don’t need an international version of the chumby with 220V etc.
But it would be nice if they accepted at least international credit cards to make it a little bit easier to buy something from them. I know about international-orders.com but they charge additional 40$ for the chumby and I think it was 75$ for shipping to Germany…
I want to buy a Chumby but I would like to know if it works with a 220V current?
I’m using mine in Germany and it works flawless with 220V.
Great!! Thanks for the info! I’m desiring for receive mine! ^^
Thanks!
